Common Applications:

  • Electrophoresis: An application used to separate a mixture of charged molecules within a suitable gel. This application is useful in the separation of mixtures made up of proteins, DNA or RNA.
  • Enzyme Purification: Enzymes are a globular protein consisting of an active site used to catalyze a reaction. Enzyme purification is a series of steps to isolate a type of protein from a mixture. This is typically performed to develop a better understanding of that specific protein and its interactions.
  • Cell Culture: This is the growth and maintenance of a cell when removed from the body. The typical habitable environment for this cell is a glass container with nutrient-filled material.
  • Molecular Biology: The study of the structure, function and composition of a molecule in biology.
  • Protein Denaturants: Protein denaturants are compounds used in the unfolding of proteins to convert their multidimensional structures into their original polypeptide chain.

Buffer Categories:

  • Goods Buffers: Twelve buffering agents selected by Norman Good, based on their chemical properties as being the ideal buffers in biochemistry. The criteria included pH stability, minimal reactivity, stability, and low absorbance, among others.
  • Zwitterionic Buffers: Buffers that contain a structure capable of possessing opposite charges. Also referred to as a dipolar buffer.
  • Biological Buffers: Buffers used in various cell culture applications. These buffers are most useful for the maintenance of pH and process stability due to their resistivity to pH changes.
